2012

February:

The Dollmaker” by Harriet Simpson Arnow

It is the WWII story of Gertie Nevels and her family who live in Appalachia, and what transpires when they must relocate to Detroit, where her husband has found work.  It is a story of a clash of cultures and values, unendurable poverty, despair and determination to protect what is most precious.  Written in 1954, it is described by the New York Times Book Review as "A masterwork...A superior book of unforgettable strength and  glowing richness."  Please join us on February 7 at noon in the Fireside Room to discuss this truly remarkable novel

March:

"Angle of Repose" by Wallace Stegner

The Brown Bag book for March is the Pulitzer Prize winning novel "Angle of Repose" by Wallace Stegner, and was chosen by Modern Library as_ one of the best 100 novels of the 20th century.  Penguin describes it as "a story of discovery -- personal, historical, and geographical...What emerges is an enthralling portrait of four generations."  Please join us on March 6 at noon in the Fireside Room to discuss this "...deeply moving novel, that through the prism of one family, illuminates the American present against the fascinating background of its past."
