Captain Ahab (Moby Dick), the federal reserve system of banking, Ebenezer Scrooge (A Christmas Carol), public education reforms, Peter Rabbit, Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound, Josephine March (Little Women), Mother’s Day, the phrase “white elephant,” The Christopher Reeve Foundation, the telephone, The Jefferson Bible, the ASPCA, Billy Pilgrim (Slaughterhouse Five), The American Red Cross, Taliesin, Newman’s Own products, John Quincy Adams. *

Most likely, you have seen the connection between these seemingly disparate items. They all are the creations of Unitarians or Universalists or Unitarian Universalists. For decades, I have delighted in reciting these names and accomplishments, proud of our creative forebears (and contemporaries!) and their contributions to the world. Of course, there are a few we’d just as soon not mention, but for the most part the ethics and motivations of these famous people of faith, OUR faith, have made our world a better place, eased the suffering and improved the lives of us all.

This Chalice Year our young people in both Sunday morning religious education ministry sessions will focus the seven principles of our UU faith and on the accomplishments and contributions made by their “religious relatives.” Using a variety of resources and curricula, the adult leaders of our youth welcome the help, input and participation of other adults, particularly parents.

Many minds and hands are needed to provide this ministry for our children and youth. Please call me at my office or drop by the Children’s Religious Education table to find out how to be part of this ministry. All are welcome!
