IT'S MILLER TIME
Yes, folks, for the third time in 2 years we eschew our usual comic format and offer another gripping drama by Arthur Miller.
When: Monday January 9 at 7:00
Where: ROOM 10
What: THE CRUCIBLE by Arthur Miller
Who: UUCPA Thespians
Why: To read a timeless, real drama by one of America's greatest playwrights.
Let me rephrase that -
When: 1692
Where: Salem, Massachusetts
What: The Salem witch-hunt
Who: John Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, Mary Warren, Rev. Parris, Rev. Hale, Judge Hathorne, et al.
Why: To reenact one of the most shameful episodes in American history.
On another level, one could say -
When: 1953
Where: Washington, D. C. and Broadway, New York City
What: The HUAC hearings and the opening of THE CRUCIBLE
Who: Sen. Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn, J. Parnell Thomas, the "Hollywood Ten", Arthur Miller, et al.
Why: To see the parallels between the Salem witch-hunt for witches and the McCarthy witch-hunt for Communists
And finally -
When: 2006
Where: Everywhere USA
What: THE CRUCIBLE by Arthur Miller
Who: Everyone USA
Why: To look for parallels between the Salem Trials, the HUAC hearings in the 1950's, and the PATRIOT Act today.
The events in THE CRUCIBLE took place in 1692, the play was relevant when it was written, and it is relevant today. But above all, it is great drama. As you read a part you will get caught up in the action of all, the hypocrisy of some, the villainy of others, and the moral dilemmas of many. YOU may get one of the major parts. ME, I'm taking dibs on Frances Nurse, Rebecca's husband. After all, how often does a guy get to be his own great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather?
