  • What:      ON THE VERGE by ERIC OVERMYER
  • Who:       UUCPA Thespians
  • Why:       To explore “The Geography of Yearning”.

There were many real historical Victorian lady travelers.  Mr. Obermyer has distilled them into three:  “Mary is the oldest, the leader, a passionate scientist, ebullient, joyful, not dry or academic.  Fanny is conservative and has a wry wit.  Alex is the youngest.  An apostle of the future, she is most modern, most out of place in the Victorian world.  She has boundless energy.”

Their trek through Terra Incognita! is a journey through both space and time.  It begins in 1888 at “Latitude 15 degrees south . . . Somewhere east of Australia and west of Peru” and ends somewhere in southern United States (I picture it as Arizona, but it could be Florida – or Hollywood) in 1955.  En route they encounter adventures and also various objects such as egg beaters, an “I Like Ike” button , and a newspaper clipping from 1973 – relics washed back from the future.

The play is performed on stage with a cast of four – the three ladies and a man who plays all the “natives”, etc. that pop up from time to time.  We shall read it with any number by casting the three ladies as “teams” who will rotate the reading through the 22 scenes.  So everyone who comes is guaranteed a part.

Make a reservation for Monday, November 13 in Room 10 or Tuesday, November 28 in Room 9.  Call me or send an email to  thespians-info@uucpa.org .  Or just show up promptly at 7 pm..
