SIXTY YEARS AGO IN WASHINGTON

BORN YESTERDAY opened on Broadway February 4, 1946. On stage, Harry Brock: ("My first job . . . I bought a kid out with a swift kick in the keester") and Billie Dawn: ("If he don't come across, I don't come across") come to Washington.

  • When: Monday March 13 at 7:00
  • Where: ROOM 10
  • What: BORN YESTERDAY by Garson Kanin
  • Who: UUCPA Thespians
  • Why: To reminisce about the good old days when the good guys stood a chance against the corrupt business men and politicians

Brock is arrogant and stupid. Billie is beautiful and ignorant. Brock's lawyer, Devery, is weak and intelligent. Senator Hedges is pompous and corrupt. Newspaper reporter Paul is sincere and idealistic. When Brock and party arrive in Washington, Devery tells Brock that Billie has to learn some "culture" or she'll be an embarrassment to him as he tries to "do business with" Senator Hedges. Brock offers Paul $200 a week to "show her the ropes, sort of . . . what goes on and all like that".

Well, you can guess how it all turns out, but there are some delightful lines and plot twists on the way. It's real fun to spend a couple of hours being somebody you wouldn't dream of being in real life.
