PUCK: What fools these mortals be
— William Shakespeare, 1595-6
The children stared at him – from his dark blue cap, like a big columbine flower, to his bare, hairy feet. At last he [Puck] laughed . . . “What on Human Earth made you act Midsummer Night’s Dream three times over, on Midsummer Eve in the middle of a Ring . . . ?”
— Rudyard Kipling, “Puck of Pook’s Hill”, 1905-6.
When and Where:
Monday, August 13, at 7 pm in Room 10
Tuesday, August 28, at 7 pm in Room 9
What: MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Who: UUCPA Thespians
Why: To enjoy some light-hearted summer magic.
Midsummer Eve is long past, but August 28 is the night of the Full Moon which can also be a time of magic.
And Room 9 is not a “Ring” – or is it?
BUT I will have read this play once to write this column and a second time on Monday August 13, so that on Tuesday, August 28 I will be reading for the third time a magical play at a magical time in what might well be a magical place.
I’m willing to chance it. Do you dare to reserve a place to read it with me? Or would you rather play it safe and sign up for the first reading? Whichever you do, remember that your reservation is good only if get there by the 7 PM starting time. Send an email to thespians-info@uucpa.org or call or snail-mail me – or just show up. You‘ll be most welcome.
— Philip Hodge, Chair of Thespians
P.S. I’m also accepting reservations on Monday, September 10 or Tuesday, September 25 for SHAKESPEARE IN HOLLYWOOD – a hilarious spoof of the above.
