A CINDERELLA STORY?

Yes and No. The term is used for any tale where a girl from the "lower classes" falls in love with the guy from the "upper classes" and, after various vicissitudes, marries him and "they live happily ever after". That definition fits Sabrina, but . . .

When: Monday June 13, 2005 at 7:00 or Tuesday June 28, 2005 at 7:00

Where: FIRESIDE ROOM

What: SABRINA FAIR by Samuel Taylor

Who: UUCPA Thespians

Why: To be one of a group of intelligent characters involved in a romance.

Cinderella lived in a dream world, waiting for a fairy godmother to show up and make her dreams come true. Sabrina, daughter of the Larrabee's chauffeur, lives in the real world. She gets herself an education and a good job with increasing responsibility. To anyone but a social snob, the question is not, "Is Sabrina good enough for the Larrabees?" but, "Are the Larrabees good enough for Sabrina?"

The Larrabees are an interesting family, and you'll enjoy being any of them. Mr. L. is an old-school moneyed aristocrat, so self-secure that he doesn't need to throw his weight around. His wife Maude is very aware of her high social status, but can be realistic when she has to. Older son Linus is a real go-getter. He runs the family business and thinks women are great to play with but has no intention of making a commitment. His kid brother David, on the other hand has been married 3 times but is currently spouseless.

But they are not the only interesting people. Sabrina's father, Fairchild, has the brains to be much "higher" than a chauffeur, but he loves his job because it gives him so much time to read. Family friend Julia has a major role, and injects a note of sanity into the fairy-tale atmosphere. Finally, there is Paul, a rich young business-man from France who has fallen for Sabrina in his own way.

The play opens as Sabrina returns home to the Larrabee estate after 5 years in Europe. She wants to see if her childhood infatuation with David is still alive.

From here on, it's up to you. Come to the Fireside Room at 7 pm on either Monday June 13 or Tuesday June 28 and help these characters come alive.

To make a reservation, send an email to thespians-info@uucpa.org and show up promptly at 7:00 pm. Or you can just show up - but those with reservations get the best parts!
