On August 9 the UUCPA Action Council approved a new justice project, the Mentor Tutor Connection. This organization has been providing tutoring and mentoring to students in Mountain View and Los Altos for many years. This year local schools will begin the new year with all remote instruction, which makes both tutoring and mentoring more important than ever.
On August 12, Mountain View and Los Altos public high schools will kick off the new school year. Unfortunately, many students will be starting the year with new burdens caused by social isolation, uncertainty, trauma, and stress. Shortly after, on Aug 17 and 19 respectively, the Mountain View Whisman and the Los Altos elementary school districts will begin their new school year. In preparation, MTC is currently recruiting volunteers to support students through its Mentoring Program and its new Remote Tutoring program. With so much time spent away from school, there will be a significant demand for outside support, and MTC is ready to help.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a tutor or a mentor to a local student at this critical time, please visit the Mentor Tutor Connection events page to learn about volunteer information sessions and tutor/mentor training coming up soon, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope you will consider volunteering with MTC if helping local students feels right for you in these difficult times. Our own Karen Skold has been mentoring a high school student for the past three years and would be happy to share her experience with you if you are interested in supporting this effort.
