SUMMARY:Green Sanctuary Fourth Friday Film
DESCRIPTION:Green Sanctuary Fourth Friday Film “Power to Heal shows both
the destructive legacy of racism in American health care and the potentia
l for collective action to redress these wrongs. We should be inspired by
Medicare’s role in desegregating our nation’s hospitals\, and should i
nsist on further reform…to address the systemic racism that plagues pati
ents of color to this day.” Dr. Claudia Fegan\, National Coordinator\, P
hysicians for a National Health Program\n\nAs we as a society continue to
struggle with persistent\, systemic racism and the urgent need for univers
al\, affordable healthcare\, Fourth Friday will take a close look at a lit
tle known\, but remarkable connection between the two issues.\n\nPower to
Heal recounts a poignant chapter in the historic struggle to secure equal
and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story
is the tale of how a new national program\, Medicare\, was used to mount a
dramatic\, coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals ac
ross the country in a matter of months.\n\nBefore Medicare\, disparities i
n access to hospital care were dramatic. Less than half the nation’s hos
pitals served black and white patients equally\, and in the South\, 1/3 of
hospitals would not admit African-Americans even for emergencies.\n\nUsin
g the carrot of Medicare dollars\, the federal government virtually ended
the practice of racially segregating patients\, doctors\, medical staffs\,
blood supplies\, and linens. Power to Heal illustrates how Movement leade
rs and grass-roots volunteers pressed and worked with the federal governme
nt to achieve a greater measure of justice and fairness for African-Americ
ans.\n\nAfter the film\, we hope you stay to reflect together on the film
and the lessons it might have for the continuing struggles for social just
ice and equal access to healthcare.\n\nFilms are shown on the fourth Frida
y of the month on a variety of topics and themes in the Fireside Room sta
rting at 7:30 pm. Check out the TransitionPaloAlto website: https://trans
itionpaloalto.org/projects/friday-night-movies/ for the title of the mont
hly film\, or call the church office.\n\nA typical agenda is to gather at
7:15 pm for social time\; the film starts at 7:30 pm with a discussion f
ollowing. Suggested donation is $5 – $10 to cover film costs and venue.
