SUMMARY:Green Sanctuary Fourth Friday Film - Once Was Water
DESCRIPTION:Green Sanctuary Fourth Friday Film - Once Was Water The Fourth
Friday/Film of Vision and Hope for February 28\, 2020\, is ‘Once Was Wa
ter’.\n\nLas Vegas\, in the middle of the Mojave Desert\, is the driest
city in America\, yet it leads the United States in sustainable water cons
ervation. The efforts of Las Vegas\, in its search for sustainability\, ha
ve produced creative solutions (technological\, political\, and financial)
and provide an interesting case study for cities that want to create thei
r own sustainable water system.\n\nThe film follows the story of Patricia
Mulroy\, the controversial founder of the Southern Nevada Water Authority\
, whose leadership is shaping Colorado River politics. She’s espoused co
nservation and pioneered a list of progressive urban water programs\, but
also bristled at any suggestions that Las Vegas’ growth should be limite
d.\n\nEverything to do with Las Vegas’s water supply and disposal is wat
ched\, measured and checked. 40% of the water is recycled for indoor use.
Every drop is monitored acoustically to detect possible leaks within 6\,50
0 miles of pipes. Southern Nevada’s conservation efforts have also gener
ated a keen public awareness and spawned hands-on programs in the public s
chools to teach about food-growing and water use in the desert.\n\nFilms a
re shown on the fourth Friday of the month on a variety of topics and the
mes in the Fireside Room starting at 7:30 pm. Check out the TransitionPal
 oAlto website: https://transitionpaloalto.org/projects/friday-night-movies
/ for the title of the monthly film\, or call the church office.\n\nA ty
pical agenda is to gather at 7:15 pm for social time\; the film starts at
7:30 pm with a discussion following. Suggested donation is $5 – $10 to
  cover film costs and venue.
