Is reconciliation possible?"  The art icle is available online at     www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2 021/07/george-packer-four-americas/619012/.\n\n\nPacker describes four Ame rican “tribes” that he says need to be reconciled:\n\n\n Free America        (the libertarian Red America)\n Smart America    (the coast al elite Blue America)\n Real America       (Trump's Red America)\n Just America        (BIPOC post-liberal Blue America)\n\nPacker says: \n“All four of the narratives I’ve described emerged from America’s failure to sustain and enlarge the middle-class democracy of the postwar y ears.\n\nThey all respond to real problems. Each offers a value that the o thers need and lacks ones that the others have.\nFree America celebrates t he energy of the unencumbered individual.\nSmart America respects intellig ence and welcomes change.\nReal America commits itself to a place and has a sense of limits.\nJust America demands a confrontation with what the oth ers want to avoid.\n\nThey rise from a single society\, and even in one as polarized as ours they continually shape\, absorb\, and morph into one an other. But their tendency is also to divide us\, pitting tribe against tri be.
