This month’s topic: Cultural Evolution and Post-Progressive Politics, Discussion leader: Michael Abramson.  We’ll look at the book Developmental Politics: How America Can Grow Into a Better Version of Itself by Steve McIntosh.  McIntosh is president and cofounder of the Institute for Cultural Evolution, a think tank that focuses on the cultural roots of America’s political problems.

American politics are badly broken. To solve the seemingly intractable problem of hyperpolarization, we need to look beyond the gridlocked politics of Washington D.C. In Developmental Politics, Steve McIntosh shows how this growing rift in the fabric of American society is a cultural problem that requires a cultural solution. He offers a pragmatic yet inspiring approach to our national political dilemma through a new politics of culture―one that goes right to the heart of this entrenched, complex issue. McIntosh presents a variety of innovative methods through which citizens and political leaders from across the political spectrum can reach agreement and achieve consensus.

Healing the Divide is a UUCPA group that formed after the 2016 election to ask: 1) what do we not understand about others with more conservative viewpoints, and 2) what can we learn that will help us communicate even across wide differences in belief.
