This week’s class: The spiritual in contemporary art, 1970-2020

In the past fifty years, a number of visual artists have been creating work that seems to cross into the realm of spirituality (whatever we mean by spirituality). In this online class, we’ll look at works of art by Ruth Asawa, Lucinda Childs, William Kentridge, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, Martin Puryear, and Cecilia Vicuna. The works of art will be in a variety of media, including wood, metal, video, and performance. Some of the art we’ll see pushes the boundaries of visual art into dance and poetry. Some of the questions we’ll touch on: What makes something spiritual? How do space and time, key elements of visual art, impact the spiritual? What is spiritual for you?

Please be sure you know how to use the chat function of Zoom, as much of the discussion will take place only on chat. Please be on time, as the main presentation will begin shortly after 7 p.m.

Join a weekly online class with Dan Harper, as we talk about a variety of religion-related topics (the exact topic will be announced the preceding Sunday). Stay for the whole session, or drop in when you can.
