April 29 Topic: The Wide, Wide World of New Religious Movements

New Religious Movements are those religions and alternative spiritualities that have emerged in the past century or century and a half. You’ve probably heard of a few of the well-known New Religious Movements, such as Rastafarianism, Scientology, and A Course in Miracles. But there are hundreds or perhaps thousands more New Religious Movements worldwide, encompassing an astonishing diversity of ritual practices, doctrines and philosophies, emotional experiences, and institutional organizations.

We’ll look at some of the diversity of New Religious Movements. Given that some of these movements, such as Sunday Assembly, might insist that they’re actually not religions, we’ll also have to tackle some big questions: What is religion? and, Who gets to decide what is a religion and what is not?

Join a weekly online class with Dan Harper, as we talk about a variety of religion-related topics (the exact topic will be announced the preceding Sunday). Stay for the whole session, or drop in when you can.
