Liberation Theology sprang from Latin America, where priests, monks, nuns and laypeople put Catholicism and Marxism together to create powerful alternatives for people living under oppression. It has since grown up in other cultural contexts (e.g., black United States, Palestine, India) and religious soils (e.g., Protestant, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu). It boldly declares that God has “a preferential option for the poor” and has helped put the needs of poor people and the environment closer to the center of religions, even as religious leaders opposed it due to its links with Communism and Marxism.
