 d Marxism together to create powerful alternatives for people living under
  oppression. It has since grown up in other cultural contexts (e.g.\, blac
 k United States\, Palestine\, India) and religious soils (e.g.\, Protestan
 t\, Muslim\, Jewish\, Hindu). It boldly declares that God has "a preferent
 ial option for the poor" and has helped put the needs of poor people and t
 he environment closer to the center of religions\, even as religious leade
 rs opposed it due to its links with Communism and Marxism.
