SUMMARY:Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Loss and Beauty— Ozeki
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Loss and Beauty— Ozeki An explor
 ation of ideas\, feelings\, and our life experiences\, using a different s
hort reading as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Saturdays\,
4-5. All are wide open and you are welcome to come weekly or once in a wh
 ile.\nThe reading for this session: Saturday\, August 22\, 2026\n\n\n\nIn
the story\, the narrator receives a letterpress edition of the poem [One A
rt\, by Elizabeth Bishop]\, and it winds up in a box in her basement and e
ventually is eaten by silverfish. The poem itself disintegrates into a lac
elike filigree of holes and words\, and this was something that actually d
id happen. I had a beautiful letterpress edition of the poem\, which I tac
ked to my wall\, unframed. This was on the island where I live in British
Columbia\, and the silverfish got to it\, and made it even more beautiful.
… Loss happens in so many different ways. Loss changes us. It can make
us wiser and more beautiful. In Japan\, impermanence\, ephemerality\, and
loss are very much built into the traditional aesthetic value of wabi-sabi
\, the idea that qualities like impermanence\, aging\, and imperfection ar
e exactly what makes something even more beautiful.\nRuth Ozeki\, from an
interview in Tricycle\, Fall 2026\n\nThe participants over the years have
found that the approach we take\, and the respectful\, affectionate commun
ity of inquirers in which we read and converse\, are as important as the r
eading itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in\, with a sess
ion only an hour long\, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conversatio
 n. Those who are frequently in the group get to know each other very well
this way\, and those who are new will soon find they are among friends.\n\
n\n\nFacilitators use a light hand\, posting the reading in the chat and c
alling on whoever's Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from g
roup members\, who also take turns facilitating\, if they want to try that
role.\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\nHow to join:\n\n Join this class from your Web b

;\n\n*This activity was formerly called "Sacred Text Reading." That proved
misleading--for one thing\, more often than not our sources are secular--
but it's worth describing the qualities of a sacred text\, which we still
look for in the readings we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:\n\
n connect to something of supreme importance to us\n feel more connected
to other beings or to the universe\n feel more intensely alive\n align
our lives with our values\,\n perceive or feel more deeply\n be more ful
 ly and authentically ourselves.\n
