SUMMARY:Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Modern art-Hobsbawm
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Modern art-Hobsbawm An exploration
of ideas\, feelings\, and our life experiences\, using a different short
reading as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Saturdays\, 4-5.
All are wide open and you are welcome to come weekly or once in a while.\
nThe reading for this session: Saturday September 5:\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sacred
text for this week is this photo of a reconstruction at SF MOMA (https://
 drive.google.com/file/d/1SC-tQJo9C2OjiXwASLr22tTctVdKs7SQ/view?usp=sharing
) of Leo and Gertrude Stein's art gallery / living room from 1914 and this
quote: “People came [to our apartment] to mock and stayed to pray” --
 - Leo Stein on the gallery in his and Gertrude Stein's apartment at 27 Fle
urus Street in Paris.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor additional context\, we'll discus
s this quote:\n\n\n\n"[In the late 1800s] large tracts of the bourgeoisie
itself found themselves so little engaged in the generation of wealth\, an
d drifting so rapidly and so far away from the puritan ethic\, the values
of work and effort\, accumulation through abstention\, duty and moral earn
estness\, which had given them their identity\, pride and ferocious energy
[....] There was likewise a crisis of ideology\, in the bourgeoise's belie
f in but also in progress\, reform and a moderate liberalism. -- Eric Hobs
bawm\, Age of Empire (1873-1914)\n\n\nThe participants over the years have
found that the approach we take\, and the respectful\, affectionate commu
nity of inquirers in which we read and converse\, are as important as the
reading itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in\, with a ses
sion only an hour long\, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conversati
on. Those who are frequently in the group get to know each other very well
this way\, and those who are new will soon find they are among friends.\n
\n\n\nFacilitators use a light hand\, posting the reading in the chat and
calling on whoever's Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from
group members\, who also take turns facilitating\, if they want to try tha
t role.\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\nHow to join:\n\n Join this class from your Web

\;\n\n*This activity was formerly called "Sacred Text Reading." That prove
d misleading--for one thing\, more often than not our sources are secular-
-but it's worth describing the qualities of a sacred text\, which we still
look for in the readings we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:\n
\n connect to something of supreme importance to us\n feel more connecte
d to other beings or to the universe\n feel more intensely alive\n align
our lives with our values\,\n perceive or feel more deeply\n be more fu
 lly and authentically ourselves.\n
