SUMMARY:Resonant Reading (Saturday)
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Reading (Saturday) An exploration of ideas\, feelings
\, and our life experiences\, using a different short reading as our sprin
gboard each time. The sessions are on Saturdays\, 4-5\, and on Wednesdays\
, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome to come twice a week or once
in a while.\n\nThe participants over the years have found that the approa
ch we take\, and the respectful\, affectionate community of inquirers in w
hich we read and converse\, are as important as the reading itself. While
many small groups begin with a check-in\, with a session only an hour long
\, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conversation. Those who are freq
uently in the group get to know each other very well this way\, and those
who are new will soon find they are among friends.\n\n\n\nFacilitators use
a light hand\, posting the reading in the chat and calling on whoever's Z
oom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group members\, who al
so take turns facilitating\, if they want to try that role.\n\nThe reading
for this session: August 2\, 2025\n\n\nWith the skill which Alcibiades []
possessed to treat every one in the way most agreeable to him\, we cannot
wonder that all his successes were attended with the most exuberant favou
r and honour\; his very errors\, at times\, being accompanied by something
of grace and felicity. And so in spite of great and frequent hurt that he
had done the city [Athens]\, he was repeatedly appointed to office and co
mmand\; while Coriolanus stood in vain for a place which his great service
s had made his due. The one\, in spite of the harm he occasioned\, could n
ot make himself hated\, nor the other\, with all the admiration he attract
ed\, succeeded in being beloved by his countrymen [Romans].\nAlcibiades ne
ver professed to deny that it was pleasant to him to be honoured\, and dis
tasteful to him to be overlooked\; and\, accordingly\, he always tried to
place himself upon good terms with all that he met\; Coriolanus's pride fo
rbade him to pay attentions to those who could have promoted his advanceme
nt\, and yet his love of distinction made him feel hurt and angry when he
was disregarded. Such are the faulty parts of his character\, which in all
other respects was a noble one. For his temperance\, continence\, and pro
bity he claims to be compared with the best and purest of the Greeks\; not
in any sort or kind with Alcibiades\, the least scrupulous and most entir
ely careless of human beings in all these points.\n\nSource: Plutarch's Pa

d Text Reading." That proved misleading--for one thing\, more often than n
ot our sources are secular--but it's worth describing the qualities of a s
acred text\, which we still look for in the readings we choose. It is any
reading that helps us to:\n\n connect to something of supreme importance
to us\n feel more connected to other beings or to the universe\n feel mo
re intensely alive\n align our lives with our values\,\n perceive or fee
l more deeply\n be more fully and authentically ourselves.\n
