SUMMARY:Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Notre Dame-Hugo
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Reading (Saturday)-Notre Dame-Hugo An exploration of
ideas\, feelings\, and our life experiences\, using a different short read
ing as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Saturdays\, 4-5\, an
d on Wednesdays\, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome to come twic
e a week or once in a while.\n\nThe participants over the years have found
that the approach we take\, and the respectful\, affectionate community o
f inquirers in which we read and converse\, are as important as the readin
g itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in\, with a session o
nly an hour long\, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conversation. Th
ose who are frequently in the group get to know each other very well this
way\, and those who are new will soon find they are among friends.\n\n\n\n
Facilitators use a light hand\, posting the reading in the chat and callin
g on whoever's Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come from group
members\, who also take turns facilitating\, if they want to try that role
.\n\nThe reading for this session: Saturday (9/27 at 4PM)\n\nThere certain
ly are few finer architectural pages than this façade [of the Notre Dame
of Paris]\, where\, successively and at once\, the three portals hollowed
out in an arch\; the broidered and dentated cordon of the eight and twenty
royal niches\; the immense central rose window\, flanked by its two later
al windows\, like a priest by his deacon and subdeacon\; the frail and lof
ty gallery of trefoil arcades\, which supports a heavy platform above its
fine\, slender columns\; and lastly\, the two black and massive towers wit
h their slate penthouses\, harmonious parts of a magnificent whole\, super
posed in five gigantic stories\;—develop themselves before the eye\, in
a mass and without confusion\, with their innumerable details of statuary\
, carving\, and sculpture\, joined powerfully to the tranquil grandeur of
the whole\; a vast symphony in stone\, so to speak\; the colossal work of
one man and one people\, all together one and complex\, like the Iliads an
d the Romanceros\, whose sister it is\; prodigious product of the grouping
together of all the forces of an epoch\, where\, upon each stone\, one se
es the fancy of the workman disciplined by the genius of the artist start
 forth in a hundred fashions\; a sort of human creation\, in a word\, power
ful and fecund as the divine creation of which it seems to have stolen the
  double character\,—variety\, eternity.\n—Victor Hugo\, Notre Dame of
 Paris\, translated by Isabel Hapgood\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\nHow to j

called "Sacred Text Reading." That proved misleading--for one thing\, more
often than not our sources are secular--but it's worth describing the qua
lities of a sacred text\, which we still look for in the readings we choos
 e. It is any reading that helps us to:\n\n connect to something of suprem
e importance to us\n feel more connected to other beings or to the univer
se\n feel more intensely alive\n align our lives with our values\,\n pe
rceive or feel more deeply\n be more fully and authentically ourselves.\n
