SUMMARY:Resonant Reading (Wednesday)-Under the Sun-Willa Cather
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Reading (Wednesday)-Under the Sun-Willa Cather An exp
loration of ideas\, feelings\, and our life experiences\, using a differen
t short reading as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Saturday
s\, 4-5\, and on Wednesdays\, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome
to come twice a week or once in a while.\n\nThe participants over the year
s have found that the approach we take\, and the respectful\, affectionate
community of inquirers in which we read and converse\, are as important a
s the reading itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in\, with
a session only an hour long\, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the conv
ersation. Those who are frequently in the group get to know each other ver
y well this way\, and those who are new will soon find they are among frie
nds.\n\n\n\nFacilitators use a light hand\, posting the reading in the cha
t and calling on whoever's Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* come
from group members\, who also take turns facilitating\, if they want to t
ry that role.\n\nThe reading for this session: Wednesday\, September 17th\
n\nI sat down in the middle of the garden\, where snakes could scarcely ap
proach unseen\, and leaned my back against a warm yellow pumpkin. There we
re some ground-cherry bushes growing along the furrows\, full of fruit. I
turned back the papery triangular sheaths that protected the berries and a
te a few. All about me giant grasshoppers\, twice as big as any I had ever
seen\, were doing acrobatic feats among the dried vines. The gophers scur
ried up and down the ploughed ground. There in the sheltered draw-bottom t
he wind did not blow very hard\, but I could hear it singing its humming t
une up on the level\, and I could see the tall grasses wave. The earth was
warm under me\, and warm as I crumbled it through my fingers. Queer littl
e red bugs came out and moved in slow squadrons around me. Their backs wer
e polished vermilion\, with black spots. I kept as still as I could. Nothi
ng happened. I did not expect anything to happen. I was something that lay
under the sun and felt it\, like the pumpkins\, and I did not want to be
anything more. I was entirely happy. Perhaps we feel like that when we die
and become a part of something entire\, whether it is sun and air\, or go
odness and knowledge. At any rate\, that is happiness\; to be dissolved in
to something complete and great. When it comes to one\, it comes as natura
lly as sleep.\n–from Book 1\, Chapter 2 of My Antonia by Willa Cather\n\

s formerly called "Sacred Text Reading." That proved misleading--for one t
hing\, more often than not our sources are secular--but it's worth describ
ing the qualities of a sacred text\, which we still look for in the readin
gs we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:\n\n connect to somethin
g of supreme importance to us\n feel more connected to other beings or to
the universe\n feel more intensely alive\n align our lives with our val
ues\,\n perceive or feel more deeply\n be more fully and authentically o
 urselves.\n
