SUMMARY:Resonant Reading (Wednesday)-I want you to get mad—Beale
DESCRIPTION:Resonant Reading (Wednesday)-I want you to get mad—Beale An
exploration of ideas\, feelings\, and our life experiences\, using a diffe
rent short reading as our springboard each time. The sessions are on Satur
days\, 4-5\, and on Wednesdays\, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welco
me to come twice a week or once in a while.\n\nThe participants over the y
ears have found that the approach we take\, and the respectful\, affection
ate community of inquirers in which we read and converse\, are as importan
t as the reading itself. While many small groups begin with a check-in\, w
ith a session only an hour long\, Resonant Reading jumps right in to the c
onversation. Those who are frequently in the group get to know each other
very well this way\, and those who are new will soon find they are among f
riends.\n\n\n\nFacilitators use a light hand\, posting the reading in the
chat and calling on whoever's Zoom hand is up. Suggestions for readings* c
ome from group members\, who also take turns facilitating\, if they want t
o try that role.\n\nThe reading for this session: Wednesday\, March 25th\
n\nI don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad
. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job
. The dollar buys a nickel's worth\; banks are going bust\; shopkeepers ke
ep a gun under the counter\; punks are running wild in the street\, and th
ere's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do\, and there's no end to
it.\nWe know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. An
d we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today
we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes\, as if that's the
way it's supposed to be!\nWe all know things are bad—worse than bad—t
hey're crazy.\nIt's like everything everywhere is going crazy\, so we don'
t go out any more. We sit in the house\, and slowly the world we're living
in is getting smaller\, and all we say is\, "Please\, at least leave us a
lone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-be
 lted radials\, and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone."\nWell\, I'm
not going to leave you alone.\nI want you to get mad!\nI don't want you t
o protest. I don't want you to riot. I don't want you to write to your Con
gressman\, because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know
what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and th
e crime in the street.\nAll I know is that\, first\, you've got to get mad
 .\nYou've gotta say\, "I'm a human being\, goddammit! My life has value!"\
nSo\, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your ch
airs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window\, open it\, and
stick your head out and yell\,\n"I'm as mad as hell\, and I'm not going to
take this anymore!!"\n—Howard Beale from the movie Network (written by
Paddy Chayefsky) 1976\n\n\nHow to join:\n\n\n\n Join this class from your

p\;\n\n*This activity was formerly called "Sacred Text Reading." That prov
ed misleading--for one thing\, more often than not our sources are secular
--but it's worth describing the qualities of a sacred text\, which we stil
l look for in the readings we choose. It is any reading that helps us to:\
n\n connect to something of supreme importance to us\n feel more connect
ed to other beings or to the universe\n feel more intensely alive\n alig
n our lives with our values\,\n perceive or feel more deeply\n be more f
 ully and authentically ourselves.\n
