SUMMARY:Sacred Text Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Text Reading Group \n\n\nA weekly online sacred text re
ading group with Amy\n\nUsing a spiritual-practice approach\, in each sess
ion we will explore a different brief scriptural text in depth. The aims o
f the sessions are educational (learning something about the texts and tra
ditions)\, spiritual/moral (discovering what the texts ask of us)\, and co
mmunity-building (getting to know each other better). Amy will have a vers
ion of the text available to share\; “bring” your own if you like. All
are welcome\, as are your suggestions of future texts. About half our rea
dings so far have been those suggested by group members.\n\n\nOur text for
Saturday\, January 30\, is a poem from the Majjhima Nikaya 131\, from The
ravada Buddhism (the Pali canon). The most literal translation of the Pali
word ahoratta may be "day and night."\n\nHere are four translations:\n\n&
 nbsp\;\n\n\nBhikkhu Bodhi's version:\n\nA Single Excellent Night\n\nLet me
not revive the past\n\nOr on the future build my hopes\;\n\nFor the past
has been left behind\n\nAnd the future has not been reached.\n\nInstead wi
th insight let me see\n\nEach presently arisen state\;\n\nLet me know that
and be sure of it\,\n\nInvincibly\, unshakeably.\n\nToday the effort must
be made\;\n\nTomorrow Death may come\, who knows?\n\nNo bargain with Mort
ality\n\nCan keep him and his hordes away\,\n\nBut one who dwells thus ard
 ently\,\n\nRelentlessly\, by day\, by night—\n\nIt is he\, the Peaceful
Sage has said\,\n\nWho has had a single excellent night.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nby
Gil Fronsdal:\n\nAn Auspicious Day\n\nDon't chase the past\n\nOr long for
the future.\n\nThe past is left behind\;\n\nThe future is not yet reached.
\n\nHave insight into whatever phenomenon is present\,\n\nRight where it i
s\;\n\nNot faltering and not agitated\,\n\nBy knowing whatever is present\
n\nOne develops the mind.\n\nArdently do what should be done today--\n\nWh
o knows\, death may come tomorrow.\n\nThere is no bargaining with Mortalit
 y\n\nAnd his great army.\n\nWhoever dwells thus ardent\,\n\n--active day a
nd night--\n\nIs\, says the peaceful sage\,\n\nOne who has an auspicious d
 ay.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nby Thanissaro Bhikkhu:\n\nAn Auspicious Day\n\nYou shoul
dn't chase after the past or place expectations on the future. What is pas
t is left behind. The future is as yet unreached. Whatever quality is pres
ent you clearly see right there\, right there. Not taken in\, unshaken\, t
hat's how you develop the heart. Ardently doing what should be done today\
, for — who knows? — tomorrow death. There is no bargaining with Morta
lity &amp\; his mighty horde. Whoever lives thus ardently\, relentlessly b
oth day &amp\; night\, has truly had an auspicious day: so says the Peacef
ul Sage.  \n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nAnd by Ñanananda:\n\nThe Ideal Lover of Soli
tude \n\nLet one not trace back the past\nOr yearn for the future-yet-to-c
ome.\nThat which is past is left behind\nUnattained is the "yet-to-come."\
nBut that which is present he discerns —\nWith insight as and when it co
 mes.\n\nThe Immovable — the-non-irritable.\n\nIn that state should the w
ise one grow\n\nToday itself should one bestir\n\nTomorrow death may come
 — who knows?\n\nFor no bargain can we strike\n\nWith Death who has his m
ighty hosts.\n\nBut one who dwells thus ardently\n\nBy day\, by night\, un
tiringly\n\nHim the Tranquil Sage has called\n\nThe Ideal Lover of Solitud
