SUMMARY:Sacred Text Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Text Reading Group \n\n\n\nA twice-weekly online sacred
text reading group. We meet on Saturdays\, 4-5\, and on Wednesdays\, 12-1
. All are wide open and you are welcome!\n\nUsing a spiritual-practice app
roach\, in each session we will explore a different brief scriptural text
in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning something abo
ut the texts and traditions)\, spiritual/moral (discovering what the texts
ask of us)\, and community-building (getting to know each other better).
Our practice usually follows this version of Lectio Divina.\n\nThe facilit
ator will have a version of the text available to share\; “bring” your
own if you like. All are welcome\, as are your suggestions of future text
 s. Group members also take turns facilitating\, if they want to try that r
ole.\n\n\n\nOur text for Saturday\, October 2\, 2021 comes from Civil Righ
ts activist Diane Nash\, who helped organized the Nashville sit-in in1960
and helped found the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC):\n\n
The movement had a way of reaching inside me and bringing out things that
I never knew were there. Like courage\, and love for people. It was a real
experience to be seeing a group of people who would put their bodies betw
een you and danger. And to love people that you work with enough that you
would put your body between them and danger. I was afraid of going to jail
 . I said\, “I’ll do telephone work\, and I’ll type\, but I’m reall
y afraid to go to jail.” But when the time came to go to jail\, I was fa
r too busy to be afraid.\nAnd we had to go\, that’s what happened.\nI th
ink it’s really important that young people today understand that the mo
vement of the sixties was really a people’s movement. The media and hist
ory seem to record it as Martin Luther King’s movement\, but young peopl
e should realize that it was people just like them\, their age\, that form
ulated goals and strategies\, and actually developed the movement. When th
ey look around now\, and see things that need to be changed\, they should
say: “What can I do? What can my roommate and I do to effect that change
 ?”\n\nFor check-in / getting-acquainted time\, the room will be open ten
minutes before and ten minutes after the session.\n\n\nHow to join:\n\n
