SUMMARY:Sacred Text Reading Group (Tolkien)
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Text Reading Group (Tolkien) \n\n\nA twice-weekly onlin
e sacred text reading group. We meet on Saturdays\, 4-5\, and on Wednesday
 s\, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome!\n\nUsing a spiritual-prac
tice approach\, in each session we will explore a different brief scriptur
al text in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning somet
hing about the texts and traditions)\, spiritual/moral (discovering what t
he texts ask of us)\, and community-building (getting to know each other b
etter). Our practice usually follows this version of Lectio Divina.\n\nThe
facilitator will have a version of the text available to share\; “bring
” your own if you like. All are welcome\, as are your suggestions of fut
ure texts. Group members also take turns facilitating\, if they want to tr
y that role.\n\nOur text on Saturday\, November 20\, 2021 is from an essay
by J. R. R. Tolkien. He wrote it to accompany a short fairy tale he wrote
called “Smith of Wootton Major\," which was published in 1965. You can
read the full essay\, as well as the story\, in Smith of Wootton Major: Ex
 tended Edition. J. R. R. Tolkien. Harper Collins\, 2005.\n\n\nFaery [Magic
] represents at its [most basic level] a breaking out (at least in mind) f
rom the iron ring of the familiar\, still more from the adamantine ring of
belief that [the familiar] is known\, possessed\, controlled--a constant
awareness of a world beyond these rings.\n\nMore strongly [magic] represen
ts love: that is\, a love and respect for all things\, ʻinanimateʼ and
ʻanimateʼ\, an unpossessive love of them as ʻotherʼ. This ʻloveʼ wil
l produce both truth and delight. Things seen in its light will be respect
 ed\, and they will also appear delightful\, beautiful\, wonderful\, even g
lorious.\nTo have check-in time\, or if you are new and would like a brief
orientation\, arrive ten minutes early. And all are welcome to stay ten m
inutes after as well\, for more getting-acquainted time.\n\n\nHow to join:
