DESCRIPTION:Sacred Text Reading Group (Tolstoy)  \n\n\nA twice-weekly onlin
 e sacred text reading group. We meet on Saturdays\, 4-5\, and on Wednesday
 s\, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome!\n\nUsing a spiritual-prac
 tice approach\, in each session we will explore a different brief scriptur
 al text in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning somet
 hing about the texts and traditions)\, spiritual/moral (discovering what t
 he texts ask of us)\, and community-building (getting to know each other b
 etter). Our practice usually follows this version of Lectio Divina.\n\nThe
  facilitator will have a version of the text available to share\; “bring
 ” your own if you like. All are welcome\, as are your suggestions of fut
 ure texts. Group members also take turns facilitating\, if they want to tr
 y that role.\n\n\nOur text for Saturday\, December 4\, 2021\, is from "Res
 urrection\," by Leo Tolstoy.\n\n"If a psychological problem were set to fi
 nd means of making men of our time⁠—Christian\, humane\, simple\, kind
  people⁠—perform the most horrible crimes without feeling guilty\, onl
 y one solution could be devised: to go on doing what is being done. It is 
 only necessary that these people should be governors\, inspectors\, police
 men\; that they should be fully convinced that there is a kind of business
 \, called government service\, which allows men to treat other men as thin
 gs\, without human brotherly relations with them\, and also that these peo
 ple should be so linked together by this government service that the respo
 nsibility for the results of their actions should not fall on any one of t
 hem separately. Without these conditions\, the terrible acts I witnessed t
 oday would be impossible in our times. It all lies in the fact that men th
 ink there are circumstances in which one may deal with human beings withou
 t love\; and there are no such circumstances. One may deal with things wit
 hout love. One may cut down trees\, make bricks\, hammer iron without love
 \; but you cannot deal with men without it\, just as one cannot deal with 
 bees without being careful. If you deal carelessly with bees you will inju
 re them\, and will yourself be injured. And so with men. It cannot be othe
 rwise\, because natural love is the fundamental law of human life. It is t
 rue that a man cannot force another to love him\, as he can force him to w
 ork for him\; but it does not follow that a man may deal with men without 
 love\, especially to demand anything from them. If you feel no love\, sit 
 still"\, Nekhlúdoff thought\; "occupy yourself with things\, with yoursel
 f\, with anything you like\, only not with men. You can only eat without i
 njuring yourself when you feel inclined to eat\, so you can only deal with
