Using a spiritual-practice approach, in each session we will explore a different brief text in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning something about the texts and traditions), spiritual/moral (discovering what the texts ask of us), and community-building (getting to know each other better). We’ll have a version of the text available to share; “bring” your own if you like. All are welcome, as are your suggestions of future texts.

On Saturday, September 26, our text will be this poem by Jusammi Chikako, who lived in Japan c. 1300. Translation by Edwin A. Cranston. I suspect (but, not knowing Japanese or having access to the original, can’t confirm) that it is a tanka.

     On this summer night
All the household lies asleep,
And in the doorway,
For once open after dark,
Stands the moon, brilliant, cloudless.
