Sacred Text Reading Group (Stephen Batchelor)
Date(s) - 11/03/2021
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
A twice-weekly online sacred text reading group. We meet on Saturdays, 4-5, and on Wednesdays, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome!
Using a spiritual-practice approach, in each session we will explore a different brief scriptural text in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning something about the texts and traditions), spiritual/moral (discovering what the texts ask of us), and community-building (getting to know each other better). Our practice usually follows this version of Lectio Divina.
Amy will have a version of the text available to share; “bring” your own if you like. All are welcome, as are your suggestions of future texts. Group members also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.
Our text for Wednesday, November 3, 2021 is from Stephen Batchelor, Living With the Devil, pp. 132-133.
Others simply enjoin us not to hurt them. … On hearing the silent “do not hurt me,” we are called to risk responding to that plea. Even when someone threatens us in a voice shaking with rage, his mute cry can still be heard beneath the torrent of abuse. … Instead of fueling a spiral of mutual hatred by returning the insult, we are free to respond to the other’s deeper injunction not to hurt him. … To suffer with someone else, to imagine what it feels like for him inside the envelope of his skin, is not only a sign of our shared sentience. I find myself open to an otherness that is forever beyond my reach and control. I cannot know him in the way he knows himself, any more than he can know me in the way I know myself. The moment when mutual recognition dawns includes an awareness of what is unknowable: what it is like for him to see me with his eyes, hear me with his ears, think of me in his brain.
For check-in / getting-acquainted time, and for those who are new and want a brief orientation to the practice, the room will be open ten minutes before and ten minutes after the session.
