DESCRIPTION:Sacred Text Reading Group (Wed.)  \n\n\n\nA twice-weekly online
  sacred text reading group. We meet on Saturdays\, 4-5\, and on Wednesdays
 \, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome!\n\nUsing a spiritual-pract
 ice approach\, in each session we will explore a different brief scriptura
 l text in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning someth
 ing about the texts and traditions)\, spiritual/moral (discovering what th
 e texts ask of us)\, and community-building (getting to know each other be
 tter). Our practice usually follows this version of Lectio Divina.\n\nAmy 
 will have a version of the text available to share\; “bring” your own 
 if you like. All are welcome\, as are your suggestions of future texts. Gr
 oup members also take turns facilitating\, if they want to try that role.\
 n\nOur text today\, Wednesday\, December 1\, 2021\, will be the same as it
  was a couple of Saturdays ago. It is from the Autobiography of the philos
 opher John Stuart Mill (1873).\n\n\n\n\n\nI had what might truly be called
  an object in life\; to be a reformer of the world. … This did very well
  for several years\, during which the general improvement going on in the 
 world and the idea of myself as engaged with others in struggling to promo
 te it\, seemed enough to fill up an interesting and animated existence. Bu
 t the time came when I awakened from this as from a dream. … In this fra
 me of mind it occurred to me to put the question directly to myself: “Su
 ppose that all your objects in life were realized\; that all the changes i
 n institutions and opinions which you are looking forward to\, could be co
 mpletely effected at this very instant: would this be a great joy and happ
 iness to you?” And an irrepressible self-consciousness distinctly answer
 ed\, “No!” At this my heart sank within me: the whole foundation on wh
 ich my life was constructed fell down. All my happiness was to have been f
 ound in the continual pursuit of this end. The end had ceased to charm\, a
 nd how could there ever again be any interest in the means? I seemed to ha
 ve nothing left to live for.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe broader context may be seen he
