Lunar libration with phase2Robert Heinlein’s exploration of libertarianism, authoritarianism, and revolution will be an interesting jumping-off point for a conversation about our own political situation. With The Day the Earth Stood Still, we discussed a human species that saw ourselves as one planet rather than a collection of mutually mistrustful nations; Heinlein imagines an Earth unified in this way, and asks what would ensue if that Earth had restless lunar colonists.

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress was published in 1966. Leigh Kimmel calls it “the work of the man at the height of his powers,” and numerous critics hail its computer co-protagonist, “Mike,” as a refreshing departure from the many sci-fi cliches of intelligent computers.

The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Discussion Group was meeting via Zoom before it was cool! Lovers of science fiction and fantasy, at UUCPA and beyond, have been getting together online to talk about books, movies, and television episodes, every other month since early 2019.
