In June, some of us discussed the first book in N. K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy. By popular demand, the next time we discuss books, we’re going to talk about the entire trilogy, and by October, we’ll all have time to read all three books. (We alternate between books and TV/film; our August topic is the Doctor Who episode “Blink”.) The books of the trilogy are:

  • The Fifth Season
  • The Obelisk Gate
  • The Stone Sky

With this “triumphant achievement in fantasy literature” (Andrew Liptak, www.theverge.com), Jemisin won the Hugo Award for Best Novel an unprecedented three years in a row. The physical, social, and political world she creates is breathtakingly complex, real, and, like ours, “literally and figuratively broken.” With characters as flawed and complex as the world they inhabit, Jemisin defies fantasy cliches and challenges us, the readers, to see the troubles facing us in nuanced and compassionate ways.

We meet via Zoom; all times Pacific. All are welcome!
