Out-of-control leaders taking us all to the brink of disaster . . . with the Cold War in the past, we don’t have to worry about that anymore, right? Aliens, just pass on by. There’s no need to land your ship on the Washington Mall–the humans have everything under control.

If you feel otherwise, enjoy a deep dive into The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951; directed by Robert Wise). Patricia Neal, Michael Rennie and Hugh Marlow star along with the ominous presence of Gort (played by Lock Martin), and a Bernard Herrmann score. Will humanity unite to meet the challenge?

We’ll watch in advance and come together on October 21 to talk about it.

The Sci-Fi and Fantasy Discussion Group was meeting via Zoom before it was cool! Lovers of science fiction and fantasy, at UUCPA and beyond, have been getting together online to talk about books, movies, and television episodes, every other month since early 2019.
