SUMMARY:Sci-Fi / Fantasy Discussion Group: Forbidden Planet
DESCRIPTION:Sci-Fi / Fantasy Discussion Group: Forbidden Planet \n\n\nDoes
this dashing young actor look familiar? Would you believe Leslie Nielson\
, of later Naked Gun fame?\n\n\nIn our October movie\, he has a more serio
us role as the captain of a 22nd century spaceship crew that goes to inves
tigate a scientific colony that has mysteriously fallen silent. Forbidden
Planet (1956\; directed by Fred Wilcox\; screenplay by Cyril Hume) remains
an enduring classic of sci fi moviemaking.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForbidden Planet
pioneered an electronic score and introduced an articulated robot who was
 a fully-developed character\, a leap forward from most\, extremely low-bud
get "rolling tin cans" of the period. (Robby the Robot cost the equivalent
of over $1 million in today's dollars.) Its achievements are not only tec
hnical\, however. It grapples with numerous psychological and moral issues
\, such as artificially augmented intelligence\, our attempts to understan
d ancient civilizations\, and the power of our unexplored psyches. Don't b
 e fooled by the lurid advertising!\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n[caption id="attachment_2
7566" align="alignright" width="306"] Warning: Any resemblance between eve
nts portrayed on poster and in film is highly unlikely.[/caption]\n\nIf yo
u want to get really serious\, pair your watching with a reading of Shakes
peare's The Tempest\, whose themes and characters are similar enough to th
ose of Forbidden Planet that many viewers have concluded the writers were
deliberately adapting the play.\n\n\n\n\nStarring Walter Pidgeon\, Anne Fr
ancis\, and Nielsen.\n\nWe meet via Zoom\, using this link.\n\nMeeting ID:
  859 986 146 76\n\nPasscode: magic\n\n\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThe Sci-Fi and Fa
ntasy Discussion Group was meeting via Zoom before it was cool! Lovers of
science fiction and fantasy\, at UUCPA and beyond\, have been getting toge
ther online to talk about books\, movies\, and television episodes chosen
by the group\, every other month since early 2019. Past books include The
Broken Earth Trilogy (N. K. Jemisin)\, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (Rober
t Heinlein)\, Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler)\, The Left Hand of Dar
kness (Ursula K. Le Guin)\, Red Moon (Kim Stanley Robinson)\; past televis
ion and movies include Arrival\, Blink (Doctor Who)\, Serenity and The Tr
ain Job (Firefly)\, and The Day the Earth Stood Still.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\nTo
receive reminders of future gatherings\, subscribe to the group's very low
 -volume e-mail list.\n\n\n\n
