 \nThe stories of the march across the Selma Bridge and the children and fi
 re hoses in Birmingham are familiar to us\, but what were the strategies
  behind these key public events? And how did we get from those moments t
 o the transformative laws which followed?  In this class we will explore
  what we have learned about social movements from that time that can gu
 ide us as we face the current moment of racial reckoning and contemporary
  efforts to bring transformative change in our time.\n\n\n\nMary Lou Finl
 ey received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago and is 
 currently professor emeritus at Antioch University Seattle.  She was on
  Martin Luther King's staff in Chicago in the mid-1960s and is co-author o
 f Doing Democracy: the MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements and co-
 editor of The Chicago Freedom Movement: Martin Luther King\, Jr and Civ
 il Rights Activism in the North.  She is a certified Kingian Nonviolenc
 e trainer\, and has been conducting classes and workshops on nonviolence
