SUMMARY:No Sunday School - Intergenerational Service: No Rehearsal Christma
 s Pageant
DESCRIPTION:No Sunday School - Intergenerational Service: No Rehearsal Chri
stmas Pageant No Sunday School this week due to the Intergenerational Ser
vice: No Rehearsal Christmas Pageant.  Come join in!\n\nThis service give
s a Unitarian Universalist view of Christmas\, with a bit of social justic
e awareness\, a bit of ancient Near Eastern politics\, and a bit of poetry
. This service is a good antidote to the two extreme versions of Christmas
that dominate our society -- on the one hand\, a completely commercialize
d Christmas that's all about conspicuous consumption\, and on the other ha
nd a rigid fundamentalist Christian interpretation of Christmas.\n\nWe Uni
tarian Universalists take a more creative approach -- reinterpreting the o
ld story of Christmas with its core message of peace and love\, while reje
cting that which is unbelievable\, hateful\, or rigid. That's the message
underlying the No Rehearsal Christmas Pageant. But most importantly\, the
No Rehearsal Christmas Pageant is fun. Where else will you get to see adul
ts pretending to be sheep\, and children who become Magi?\n\nSunday Progra
ms for Families\n\nBecause we believe in learning by doing\, a most import
ant part of our religious education is participation\, with all ages\, in
the first part of regular worship services. Then during Sunday school\, yo
ung people learn and play with people their own age. Feel free to ask Sund
ay school teachers what they did this week. If you would like to review cu
rriculum materials that are not online\, please call Dan Harper.\n\n9:30 S
unday morning\, September through April\n\nChild care (for infants\, toddl
ers\, and young children) — Loving and safe care with our professional c
hild care providers. Children who are over 3 and toilet-trained may go to
Red class (if your 3-year-old is not yet toilet-trained\, they may be in t
he class as long as you are on call via cell phone if toileting is necessa
ry). To meet our child care providers\, click here.\n\n Red group (3 and
  4 year olds)\, 2018-2019 — We Are Many\, We Are One is a curriculum t
o introduce young children to age-appropriate diversity concepts in a supp
 ortive setting.\n Yellow group (gr. K-1)\, 2018-2019 — In the fall\, th
e Creating Home curriculum helps children develop a sense of home. In ea
rly winter\, children learn about feminist god-images using the story book
Hide and Seek with God. Late winter brings the wider religious world wi
th stories from Picture Book World Religions.\n Green group (grades 2-3)
\, 2018-2019 — This group begins with Spirit of Adventure to learn abo
ut Unitarian Universalist values through fun activities. In early winter\,
Timeless Themes presents stories from the Hebrew Bible (Torah). In late
winter\, From Long Ago introduces stories from other religious traditio
ns.\n Blue group (grades 4-5)\, 2018-2019 — In the fall\, the group wil
l explore social justice using In Our Hands. In early winter\, they will
learn more about liberal interpretations of Jesus with Kingdom of Equals.
In late winter\, the class uses Greek Myths to delve deeply into a few
key myths.\n For middle school (gr. 6-8) in 2018-2019\, there is a choice
of two different classes:\n\n Purple group: Ecojustice (grade 6-8) — T
his is a project-based program that includes projects relating to environm
ental justice and nature study. Projects may include urban/suburban garden
ing\, creating habitat for non-human organisms\, learning how to cook outd
oors\, and studying environmental justice heroes like Rachel Carson and Ce
sar Chavez. There will be different projects each year\, and this class ma
y be repeated.\n Purple group: Neighboring Faith Communities (mostly gr
ades 7-8) — This middle school group will visit other places of worship\
, typically beginning with another UU congregation\, moving through Jewish
and Christian groups\, and ending up with non-Western religions. Particip
ants go on 5-6 field trips during the year\, and sometimes have guest spea
kers from other faith traditions. There will be different field trips each
year\, and this class may be repeated.\n\n\n
