As we celebrate both Father’s Day and Freedom, we turn our attention to the gifts that those of us who parent and share in the lives of parents, hardly ever cease to enjoy: the children we help to nurture. While all of us, no doubt, hope to teach young people important lessons about how to navigate obstacles and achieve success in various forms, it may be equally significant that we teach them how to fall. While teaching them to dream big, should we also teach them what can happen to dreams and dreamers in the yet-to-be United States of America? This talk will wrestle with dreams as articulated by the late, great Langston Hughes.
John is a native of Marshall, Texas, a husband, father, and friend, and understands himself as a less than faithful fellow traveler, alongside others struggling to understand and impact the world he shares with others. He is the former Senior Pastor of Munger Avenue Baptist Church in Dallas, Tx. Currently, he serves as Director of Operations at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in San Francisco and as Membership Engagement Coordinator here at UUCPA.

We are on our summer schedule through July 31:
10:30: We gather in person in the Main Hall, in person on the main patio, and via Zoom: bit.ly/uucpa_service_11am. In person, we are distanced 3′ and masked for safety; proof of vaccination and a mask are required to enter the Main Hall. Outdoors, masks are not required, but are recommended. Children’s Religious Education (summer Sunday school) is in session at the same time.
