UUCPA Children & Youth Religious Education Goals Input SessionUUCPA Children & Youth Religious Education Goals Input Session

03/30/2024, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Fireside Room (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

You may have heard and read that  UUCPA has a new mission statement. What about our Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) program at UUCPA? Does our CYRE program fit with this mission? Do we have further goals for our children’s and youth programming?  You are invited to a discussion on our CYRE goals.

  • Saturday March 30 2024, 10 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Fireside Room @ UUCPA and via Zoom
  • Coffee and snacks will be provided
  • Childcare available upon request – requests needed by Tuesday March 26 at 5 pm

The CYRE program currently has these goals –

  1. Have fun and feel they are part of a community;
  2. Gain the basic religious literacy expected in our society;
  3. Learn the skills associated with liberal religion, skills such as public speaking, group  singing, basic leadership, how to work together, in-ward reflection, and so on;
  4. Prepare them to become Unitarian Universalist adults, should they choose to do so when they are old enough to make their own reasoned decision.

Are these goals still useful? Are there new goals that would serve us better?

Who should come? Everyone at UUCPA has some relationship with our children and youth programs – from being on the CYRE Committee or teaching Sunday School, to being a parent or buying a snack for a penny during Judean Village. If you would like to be involved in this conversation about our CYRE program, we encourage you to attend.

RSVP is not required but is encouraged.  RSVP by emailing revcat@uucpa.org.

If you would like to review curriculum materials that are not online, please call Cat Boyle.

Reminders are sent via the weekly Sunday School Reminder email and monthly CYRE newsletter. Sign up to get them: https://www.uucpa.org/learning/children-and-youth/newsletter/.  If you didn’t get it, please email cyrecommittee@uucpa.org to request the link for your child’s class.

Sacred Text Reading Group (Saturday)Sacred Text Reading Group (Saturday)

Memory is immersion - Bruckner

03/30/2024, 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm (Add to calendar: Google, iCal, webcal)

A twice-weekly online sacred text reading group. We meet on Saturdays, 4-5, and on Wednesdays, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome! Please note that the Zoom room now requires a password, so please drop an e-mail to sacred-text-reading+owner@uucpa.org to express interest.

What do we mean by a sacred text? Any text that helps us to:

  • connect to something of supreme importance to us
  • feel more connected to other beings or to the universe
  • feel more intensely alive
  • align our lives with our values,
  • perceive or feel more deeply
  • be more fully and authentically ourselves.

As Unitarian Universalists, we find these kinds of meanings everywhere, so the text itself might be from a so-called secular source, or from a religious canon, or something in-between.

The participants over the years have found that the approach we take, and the respectful, affectionate community of inquirers in which we read and converse, are as important as the text. Our practice usually follows one of these versions of Lectio Divina. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning something about the texts and traditions), spiritual/moral (discovering what the texts ask of us), and community-building (getting to know each other better).

The facilitator will post a version of the text in the chat for all to see. Everyone is welcome, as are your suggestions of future texts. Group members also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.

On Saturday, March 30, 2024, our text will be:

Memory is immersion in the past of all those others who comprise us. The narrator distinguishes, one by one, these voices that speak through him that must be quieted before his true inner voice can be heard. But this goal is impossible to attain: the palimpsest self,  like an ever-unpeeling onion, resists categorization. This peregrination through the continents of memory may be a marvelous journey, but it does not succeed in easing the pain. No matter how far it roams, the self is always haunted and tortured by the others; it is a room full of strangers and intruders who speak in his place.
— Pascal Bruckner

To have check-in time, or if you are new and would like a brief orientation, arrive ten minutes early. And all are welcome to stay ten minutes after as well, for more getting-acquainted time.

On Wednesday, April 4, 2024, our text will be
Late in his life, the philosopher Richard Rorty — a well-known atheist — was asked by an interviewer if he could define holy. Perhaps the interlocutor thought the aging and dying Rorty would be stumped by the question or would fall into some traditional language of reverence. But Rorty was not stumped by the question. He responded, “Holy: the hope that someday my remote descendants will live in a global civilization in which love is pretty much the only law.”

  1. Have fun and feel they are part of a community;
  2. Gain the basic religious literacy expected in our society;
  3. Learn the skills associated with liberal religion, skills such as public speaking, group  singing, basic leadership, how to work together, in-ward reflection, and so on;
