When the Dismantling White Supremacy group re-convenes on Tuesday, August 13, we’ll all share about a book we’ve read (or a podcast we’ve listened to, or a movie we’ve watched) that was created by a person of color.
Immersing ourselves in someone else’s perspective is a great way to expand our own perspective, and develop our ability to dismantle white supremacy. If you’re like me, the vast majority of what you read in school was by and about white people, and no matter how great the books were, that’s a very narrow slice of the human experience.
Need recommendations? For books, check out the piles in the photo.
Three of my own favorite podcasts are LeVar Burton Reads (short stories, largely sci-fi), Hidden Brain (human behavior) and Throughline (history). If those don’t grab you, lists abound of podcasts by Black creators, Asian and Pacific Islander creators, Indigenous creators, and Latine creators.
Likewise, type “movies by directors of color” into a search engine and you’ll get lots of lists like this one. A bunch of movies I love are on that list too. Dive in!
To inspire each other, let’s tell each other right now:
(1) what we plan to read / listen to / watch
(2) something by a person of color that we recommend to others.
I started the sharing with a post made to the Dismantling White Supremacy email list on July 3. If you would like to read it and contribute to the thread, but you are not subscribed to the list, please email dismantlingwhitesupremacy+subscribe@uucpa.org. The volume is low, and Zoom information for the session is sent to this list each month.
We welcome new attendees at any time!
Blessings,
Amy
