Sacred Text Reading Group
Date(s) - 01/09/2021
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Using a spiritual-practice approach, in each session we explore a different brief scriptural text in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning something about the texts and traditions), spiritual/moral (discovering what the texts ask of us), and community-building (getting to know each other better). Amy will have a version of the text available to share; “bring” your own if you like. All are welcome, as are your suggestions of future texts; true to our religious framework as Unitarian Universalists, anything can be sacred if it inspires wisdom in us. About half our readings so far have been those suggested by group members.

Our text for Saturday, January 9 will be this pithy statement from a poem by Tom Savage. For context, two of the major Buddhist traditions were long known as “the greater vehicle” (Mahayana) and “the lesser vehicle” (a pejorative term, Hinayana, for what is now more respectfully called “Theravada,” “teaching of the elders”).

Greater vehicle, lesser vehicle.
No matter!
All vehicles will be towed away
At owner’s expense.
