This program is a discussion on suicide prevention, a topic particularly relevant as September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Suicide is a community’s, not a single individual’s, responsibility. Our speaker will provide data, resources and programs so that attendees can learn how they can help and assist loved ones and their community with suicide prevention efforts. This program will also include opportunities for questions and discussion.

Vic Ojakian became involved in suicide prevention after the suicide death of his son in 2004. He is Co-President of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Santa Clara County’s Board and participates in several local, regional, California, and national organizations. Vic, a former City of Palo Alto Council Member and Mayor, has appeared before a federal Congressional hearing on mental health parity and the California State Senate Select Committee on Mental Health. He and his wife Mary have helped produce the Santa Clara County Suicide Prevention Strategic Plan. He has advocated and helped gain passage of California legislation promoting mental health care and suicide prevention.
