We like to tell the story that Thanksgiving began in the fall of 1621. But actually Thanksgiving has been reinvented many times, sometimes including new people, sometimes leaving people out. We’ll imagine how Thanksgiving looked from the point of different people over the centuries. Today is an intergenerational service.

Have you ever felt that you were losing something about yourself – or even that it was being taken away? Those moments are like deaths, and what follows can be like resurrection: something within us being born out of the ashes of what we used to know or what we used to be. In this intergenerational service, we hear the rest of the Easter story as Dan’s Unitarian mother told it to him, and Amy leads us all in using our minds and bodies to remember those transformative moments. For our fifth annual Chalice Sunday, we talk about where the chalice comes from in our past, and how we keep the flame burning for the future. Then we will watch our individual small lights become one great blazing altar.

We rejoice in the everyday miracles of the season, marking the winter solstice, telling the story of Hanukah, and inviting all who wish to play a part to help make the story of Jesus’s birth come to life.
Join us at UUCPA in the main hall on this longest night of the year! Our simple ceremony lasts under an hour, and is followed by abundant food – (cheese, dips, pies, nuts..) and also hot mulled wine and hot cider. Just come – food provided. Our solstice ceremony includes meditative music, readings, and all of us lighting candles to celebrate the return of light. We conclude by burning a yule log outdoors in our fire pit. Children and adults are welcomed, we can all enjoy sharing a fire and some food on a dark night!
Who is that knocking at your door? This is an intergenerational service, all about doors and what we fear is on the other side … what we hope is on the other side … what we would be surprised to find is on the other side. In our intergenerational Thanksgiving service, we give thanks for interdependence — an important corrective to the individualism that characterizes so much of our culture. Appropriately, we launch our annual Guest at Your Table program, supporting the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in connecting us to people all around the world. In our annual ritual of ingathering, we bring water from the places of our lives, and pour the many waters into a communal bowl in a ritual honoring variety and unity. We welcome the Adult Choir back after their several-week break. Music: Nicholas Dold, piano

In our annual fire service, we mark the holidays of Candlemas, St. Brigid’s Day and Imbolc–which converge at this midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox–and celebrate the many meanings of our chalice symbol. Why do we light a chalice at the beginning of our services, and what does it mean? Child care is provided at both services as always; other children remain in the Main Hall for this intergenerational service.
