Discussion Topic: The Power of Beauty
According to Plato, goodness, truth and beauty form a unified whole, inseparable and indivisible. UUs recognize the power of goodness (compassion, social justice) and truth (science), but tend to view beauty as a form of entertainment — enjoyable but subjective and not of central concern to our religion. But Nietzsche said “Without music, life would be a mistake,” and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn went so far as to say that “Beauty will save the world.” Do we underestimate the power of beauty?
