Owning your Religious Past

Most Unitarian Universalists come into the denomination from other religions; often there have been several stops along the way. Some bring warm memories of their experiences in other religious institutions, others have angry and unresolved feelings and feel scarred. Some move easily into Unitarian Universalism; others experience a traumatic estrangement from family and the center of their culture. As a congregation, we don’t always pay enough attention to these personal journeys. These workshops provide tools to examine and retrieve positive aspects of our religious histories. Because we are usually more certain about what we left behind, rather than what we bring with us, tools are needed to help us establish our path as a continuum, setting us free to make healthy commitments. This workshop is not just for “converts.” Longtime and lifelong Unitarian Universalists also experience change, sometimes profoundly, in religious identity. These sessions are enriched when people of varying “tenure” as UUs participate.
