Sacred Text Reading Group (Saturday)
Date/Time
Date(s) - 10/30/2021
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

A twice-weekly online sacred text reading group. We meet on Saturdays, 4-5, and on Wednesdays, 12-1. All are wide open and you are welcome!

Using a spiritual-practice approach, in each session we will explore a different brief scriptural text in depth. The aims of the sessions are educational (learning something about the texts and traditions), spiritual/moral (discovering what the texts ask of us), and community-building (getting to know each other better). Our practice usually follows this version of Lectio Divina.

The facilitator will have a version of the text available to share; “bring” your own if you like. All are welcome, as are your suggestions of future texts. Group members also take turns facilitating, if they want to try that role.

To have check-in time, or if you are new and would like a brief orientation, arrive ten minutes early. And all are welcome to stay ten minutes after as well, for more getting-acquainted time.

Our text for Saturday, October 30, 2021 is from Carl Jung, who was, along with his mentor, Sigmund Freud, one of the most influential 20th century psychologists. Jung was more interested than Freud in religion. His father was a minister who lost his faith early in his career but felt compelled to carry on. In his 1935 book Modern Man in Search of a Soul, he says that part of a psychoanalyst’s job is to help their patient address spiritual questions, questions that in an earlier time the patient might have sought help from a minister for. He gives his own answer to the question he poses here; we may share ours with each other as we explore.

In actual life it requires the greatest discipline to be simple, and the acceptance of oneself is the essence of the moral problem and the epitome of a whole outlook upon life. That I feed the hungry, that I forgive an insult, that I love my enemy in the name of Christ—all these are undoubtedly great virtues. What I do unto the least of my brethren, that I do unto Christ. But what if I should discover that the least amongst them all, the poorest of all the beggars, the most impudent of all the offenders, the very enemy himself—that these are within me, and that I myself stand in need of the aims of my own kindness—that I myself am the enemy who must be loved—what then?
–Modern Man in Search of a Soul. Carl Jung. Chap. 11 (Psychotherapists or the Clergy)
