Making UUCPA a sanctuary for all

A line drawing of a heart in black, and the words SIDE WITH LOVE in yellow.

You may notice some new signs around campus. They are there because the difference between public and private spaces has legal implications for immigration enforcement. ICE cannot enter private space without a judicial warrant.

We cannot prevent ICE from coming into public spaces, which some of UUCPA’s spaces are. But we can make it clear that the ministers’ offices, and the main office beyond the reception desk, are private spaces, in which others enter by invitation only and on UUCPA business. You’ll see signs making that clear. And even our worship space is open to the public only for the purpose of spiritual practices. So you will see signs on all of the doors to the Main Hall as well.

We want you to know the context so that you don’t feel put off by the signs–“What is this about private space?” On the contrary, their intention is to make our congregation safe for everyone: a sanctuary.
