How apt that we come to this line of our benediction on the day before the presidential inauguration, because protecting the weak from the strong–whoever those might be at any given moment–is one of the principal purposes of government. Yet the way we achieve that is via laws that are made by the people and that protect all the people equally, and respect for the rule of law is at a low ebb. So how did we get from the protections of law and order, so fundamental to the republic declared in 1776, to the current state of affairs?
The choir sings “American Tune” in honor of the occasion.
