Action Council Supports Amah Mutsun Tribe

This past weekend the Action Council received a request to sign on to a letter to the Palo Alto City Council advocating support for the efforts of the local Amah Mutsun tribe to prevent development of a sand and gravel pit mine on land in southern Santa Clara County that previously belonged to their people and which they consider sacred.  (They call it Juristac.).

We had only 24 hours to respond and voted unanimously to sign the letter, which was similar to the one to the Santa Clara County Supervisors which the Action Council signed in 2022.  Approval to sign this new letter was communicated to the letter’s author.  When she sent the letter to the City Council, instead of listing the Action Council as the signer, she listed the church.  This endorsement was not approved by the Board as a full church endorsement (there was no time to request this), but that is what it will look like to the City Council, which will consider this issue at its December 2 session.

The Action Council apologizes for this misrepresentation of our endorsement, but hope you will understand, given we made a similar endorsement in 2022 and no concerns were raised at that time.  If you have questions or concerns about this new endorsement, please contact the Action Council at ActionCouncil@uucpa.org.
