Healing the Divide – September 6, 1:00pm
Healing the Divide is a UUCPA group that formed after the 2016 election to ask: 1) what do we not understand about others with more conservative viewpoints, and 2) what can we learn that will help us communicate even across wide differences in belief.
Many of you know about Braver Angels, a national citizens’ organization uniting red and blue Americans in a working alliance to depolarize America. Their concern about polarization is similar to ours in Healing the Divide.
Braver Angels has a free online workshop called Inner Depolarization https://braverangels.org/online/online-depolarizing-within-workshop/. It’s aims are to help participants
- Become more aware of their own inner polarizer and find ways to counteract it
- Learn how to be critical without stereotyping, dismissing, ridiculing, or showing contempt
- Build skills for intervening in a constructive way in social conversations that veer into contempt and ridicule for people who hold other political views
In our Healing the Divide program September 6 we will learn more about Braver Angels and then introduce an exercise and skills aimed at the first goal above.
We will also make plans for our program on October 4, when we will host a “Living Room Conversation” with 4 participants from Braver Angels who identify as Red and 4 from Healing the Divide who identify as Blue or Purple. The conversation subject is 2020 Election — Concerns and Aspirations. If you are curious, you can see the Conversation Guide here.
The meeting ID is 856 2487 9820. The password and a clickable link will be sent to the Announce and CYREparents email lists the day before the meeting.
