On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Army in order to coordinate the military efforts of the thirteen colonies to wrest control of their fate from England’s monarchy. Under George Washington’s leadership, they prevailed and established a new nation. For the subsequent 250 years, while political parties have risen and fallen, argued and disagreed, even gone to war against each other, and while we have fought to extend to everyone the rights and freedoms claimed by that Congress, one conviction has united us: the United States will have no king, but only authorities chosen freely by the people and subject to the people’s laws.
This Saturday, June 14, on the 250th anniversary of that momentous decision, millions of people will raise their voices to say, “No Kings!” To join one of these local, non-partisan protests to choose from.
