You Don’t Have To Do It Alone – Reflections from Youth Climate Activism

Most of us individually do the little things like recycling, composting, reducing car usage, and eating less meat to address climate change. But the very large sources of greenhouse gasses come from businesses. Convincing businesses to switch to pricier climate alternatives can be challenging. Orhan Hosten-Mittermaier and Bella Goldwasser, two high schoolers from the Bay Area, present their current work with grocery stores. Come learn about the collective influence we can have when we join forces!

Bella Goldwasser is a senior at Alameda High School, and one of the founding members of Youthpower Climate Action. She is one of the leads on Youthpower’s Refrigerant Transition Project and is also involved in Alameda High’s Amplify environmental club.

Orhan Hosten-Mittermaier is currently a junior at College Prep in Oakland and has been a UU since birth at First Unitarian Church of Oakland. He joined Youthpower in early 2022, right when the group began its project addressing refrigerants, and has been active in the group since then.

Heather MacLeod was raised doing political action with her local UU congregation. She is one of the adult advisors for Youthpower Climate Action.
